A unique rare opportunity to own this Freelance 180 NAC-1 G-NACI offered by Wilco Aviation exclusively to the market. The NAC-1 Freelance, originally the BN-3 Nymph, is a British four-seat touring monoplane. Designed by Desmond Norman when he was with Britten-Norman, the BN-3 Nymph as it was called was an all-metal high-wing braced monoplane powered by a 115 hp Lycoming O-235 engine. It was designed to allow it to be assembled in under-developed countries which would build the aircraft under a technology transfer scheme.
With the demise of the original Britten-Norman company, Norman took the design with him to his new company NDN Aircraft. NDN planned to build and sell the Nymph with a lengthened cabin as the NAC-1 Freelance. The Nymph was reworked as the prototype Freelance and first flew in that configuration on 29 September 1984. In 1985 NDN Aircraft was renamed the Norman Aircraft Company (NAC) and components and fuselage sections for six aircraft were built. Following the failure of the company to win a military order with the NDN Firecracker military trainer the company was closed down.
During a period of development Charlie India was re-engined with the 180HP Lycoming O-360 by Vectis Aviation on the Isle of White which revolutionised its performance similar to that of Cessna 172 that it was originally built to compete with.
After negotiations with the Light Aircraft Association and the demise of the Norman Aircraft Company G-NACI was given authorisation to be issued a Permit to Fly on the LAA scheme register. CI now being one of very few 4-seat aircraft to achieve this in its class makes its appealability to the owner/operator significantly greater.
The Freelance has arguably many benefits over similar competitors. Not only are costs significantly reduced being on the Permit to Fly Scheme but it has been engineered and designed to have the 'if only' aspects incorporated into its build compared to the 172.
✅ Oversized doors, which unlike the Cessna allow for entry ahead of the main gear. A similarly placed footstep on the spring-steel gear allows for very easy entry.
✅ A very comfortable cockpit, with plenty of head and shoulder room, and a bench seat providing adequate room for the rear passengers.
✅ The instrument panels ooze British design, rebelling against the high, all-dominating American solutions that can almost obliterate forward view.
✅ Wing fold, which allows for easy storage in those smaller hangars. A hybrid gear configuration of both a nose wheel (for landing) and tail wheel (for storage) allows the aircraft to tilt back onto the tail wheel when the wings are folded.
